The quiet community of Point Loma has certainly seen its share of history. Known for its stunning water views, the town is nestled just seven miles north of the main portion of Downtown San Diego. The community of Point Loma rests along Point Loma Peninsula which stretches south around the entrance of the San Diego Bay and within view of Sea World, just west of Old Town San Diego. Like many of California’s names, Point Loma originates from the Spanish language: “loma” is the Spanish word for “hill” appropriately named for the region’s characteristic beautiful rolling hills. Erected in November of 1855, the original Point Loma Light House is one of the original eight Cape Cod influenced structures built along the California coast to aid sea navigation. The National Park Service has refurbished the interior of the lighthouse to its historic 1880′s appearance, and ranger-led talks, displays and brochures help explain the lighthouse’s interesting past to locals and visitors. The lighthouse is part of the larger Cabrillo National Monument, a heroic statue of Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo commemorating his discovery of San Diego Bay in 1542. The Annual Cabrillo Festival is held each year on the weekend closest to September 28, commemorating the arrival of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in San Diego. Cultural dances, food, and re-enactment of Cabrillo’s landing are all part of the festival activities.

Point Loma neighborhoods enjoy a year-round temperate climate. Several old-fashioned lampposts decorate the streets, suggesting an ambiance of a quieter and more genteel era. However, modernity still exists on Point Loma– many homes have been remodeled so exterior charm and modern convenience are found blended together.

Point Loma is a unique, charming neighborhood within San Diego and is an ideal place to live, work and raise a family. The town is part of the highly-acclaimed San Diego Unified School District, and is near high-end colleges and universities such as San Diego State University, Point Loma Nazarene University, University of California, San Diego, and California Western School of Law.
