Known simply as “OB” by locals, Ocean Beach is a haven for beach-goers and those seeking a peaceful and harmonious community for their family. Ocean Beach is home to sunbathing, surfing, fishing, sailing, shopping, and of course pier strolling. Locales equate “ OB ” with the excellent surfing conditions that permeate the region. Just seven miles west of Downtown San Diego, and across the bay from Sea World Resort, Ocean Beach is home to the southernmost public beach on the Point Loma peninsula. Neighboring communities Pacific Beach and Mission Beach may garner more attention from tourists, thus leaving Ocean Beach a haven for those desiring a small-town community atmosphere.
The central passageway of the community is Voltaire Street, aptly named for famed French philosopher whose introspections reflect the atmosphere of Ocean Beach. One visiting the community will discover colorful light pole banners, artistic flags, and a signature logo of a bird flying over the letters “OB” on signs and on car window stickers. There is a great deal of pride among locals who adorn property with the characteristic OB symbol.
A weekly Farmer’s Market at the 4900 Block of Newport Avenue sells food, flowers, and delectable baked goods, locally baked, grown, and produced. Numerous restaurants, surf shops, and other commercial establishments are available near the south end of the beach. The north end of the beach is primarily bordered by residential properties. Another unique feature of the community is famed Dog Beach, where one may take their dogs unleashed to scamper among the gently crashing ocean waves.
